AC Oulu’s strong start to the Veikkausliiga season is over after a loss to newly-promoted Lahti saw them drop to third. Inter Turku remain unbeaten and moved joint-top with a narrow win over Mariehamn.

Lahti Edge Oulu 2-1 to End Visitors’ Strong Run

AC Oulu’s bright start to the season has faded after back-to-back defeats. A 3-2 loss at KuPS in midweek didn’t derail their momentum, but Saturday’s setback against Lahti will sting. The newly-promoted side claimed their first points since the opening day.

Lahti needed just five minutes to go ahead. A clipped cross into the six-yard box was cleared only to Martim Augusto, who lashed a clean right-foot volley into the net from 12 yards.

Oulu pushed for an equaliser before the break and thought they had one in the 45th minute, only for Julius Korkko’s strike to be ruled out for a contentious offside. Things worsened three minutes later when Neemias headed in Romain Sans’ corner to double Lahti’s lead.

The visitors finally got a deserved goal midway through the second half. Slick build-up in the final third saw Rasmus Karjalainen pick out Korkko on the edge of the box, and the midfielder’s 20-yard drive couldn’t be denied this time.

Inter Turku made it three wins on the bounce and moved level on points with leaders KuPS, trailing only on goal difference after a narrow victory over Mariehamn. The visitors stay winless in 10th, having drawn at home and lost on the road so far.

Mariehamn struggled in the first half at Turku, managing just one shot to Inter’s 10. Despite dominating, the hosts were wasteful in front of goal and went into the break at 0-0.

Frustration looked set to grow for Inter until the 78th minute. Jussi Niska’s floated cross to the back post was headed down by Alie Conteh, with his effort squeezing between the near post and the goalkeeper to hand Turku the three points.
