Reigning champions Arsenal took advantage of Lyon mistakes to claim a 2-1 first-leg win in the UWCL semi-final...

European champions Arsenal pounced on two costly Lyon defensive errors on Sunday, fighting back to seal a 2-1 victory in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League semi-final.

The French league leaders struck first in the 18th minute as Jule Brand converted Lyon’s only shot on target of the opening half.

But Arsenal drew level just before the hour when Ingrid Engen turned into her own net after goalkeeper Christiane Endler spilled the ball.

The Gunners then went ahead late on as Olivia Smith punished another defensive mix-up.

The teams also faced off at this stage last season, with Arsenal advancing 5-3 on aggregate before beating Barcelona in the final to lift the trophy.

Lyon opened the scoring at the Emirates on Sunday as Brand drove forward, cut inside and beat Arsenal keeper Daphne van Domselaar with a composed finish.

Arsenal thought they had a lifeline five minutes after the break when they were awarded a penalty, only for VAR to overturn the decision.

Arsenal did equalise in the 58th minute, though, when Mariona Caldentey’s low free-kick somehow found its way into the net.

Endler failed to hold the ball and the unlucky Engen diverted it into her own net.

Kadidiatou Diani struck the crossbar as Lyon pushed to regain the lead, but Arsenal struck next instead.

Another miscommunication between Endler and Engen let Smith pounce, and she showed persistence to poke home in the 83rd minute.

The second leg will be played in Lyon next weekend.
