Sevilla FC secured a vital 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, boosting their LaLiga survival hopes and snapping a three-game losing streak. The match was played at Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, with Sevilla's victory lifting them out of the bottom three.

Diego Simeone, focused on the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Barcelona, fielded his youngest-ever LaLiga starting lineup, averaging 23 years and 289 days, including three debutants. Unfortunately, one of them, Dani Martinez, conceded a penalty in the opening 10 minutes after a VAR review.

Akor Adams stepped up to slot home the spot-kick, scoring the first goal under Luis Garcia Plaza despite Juan Musso's strong right-hand save attempt.

This was a bigger game for the relegation-threatened hosts, and Plaza’s men were playing with confidence.

However, Sevilla suffered a familiar setback when Atleti equalized in the 35th minute – Javier Bonar scored on his senior debut with a fine header from Julio Diaz’s cross.

It was a proud moment for the 20-year-old, but his and Atleti’s joy was short-lived – Nemanja Gudelj headed Sevilla back in front from Ruben Vargas’ corner in stoppage time.

Sevilla nearly scored a third just before the hour when Lucien Agoume’s pass found Romero in space, but his left-footed shot hit the post.

But in truth, that was the only real moment of excitement in a second half which lacked the intensity of the first. Neither side registered a solitary shot on target after the break, illustrating the clear lack of quality on show in the final third.

Nevertheless, this win for Plaza’s men moves them out of the bottom three and into the relatively lofty heights of 15th, ending a run of three successive H2H defeats in the process.

Meanwhile, Simeone will be relatively nonplussed about this result, despite succumbing to a fifth loss in their previous nine league games. Even a victory for fifth-placed Real Betis against Osasuna on Sunday would still leave them with a nine-point cushion inside the top four, with focus now shifting towards Barca’s visit to the Metropolitano
