Kwon Edges Holmgren in Tight Gwangju Final, Missed Set Point Costs Dane
World No. 350 Kwon Soon-woo beats August Holmgren 4-6, 5-7 in Gwangju. Former world No. 52 climbs 100 spots. Holmgren to hit career-high No. 163.
Dane reaches first final since last summer, set to rise to world No. 163...
August Holmgren lost the Challenger final in Gwangju to South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo 4-6, 5-7 on Sunday morning.
Kwon is currently ranked 350th in the world, though injuries and military service have prevented him from holding a higher ranking.
Five years ago he was ranked 52nd in the world and is now working his way back up. The home-soil title will lift him roughly 100 spots in the rankings when they update tomorrow.
Reaching the final will push Holmgren to around 163rd in the world.
The Dane was broken at 1-2 in the first set and never threatened to break back.
Both players held serve through the second set until the end. Leading 5-4, Holmgren earned his first break point - also a set point - but couldn’t convert.
Instead, Kwon broke for a 6-5 lead and then served out the win.
It was Holmgren’s first final appearance since last summer.
