PSV boss Peter Bosz shrugged off his side’s 4-0 defeat to AZ in the Johan Cruyff Shield, calling it useful preparation ahead of the new season.

The match turned early when Joey Veerman was sent off after nine minutes for a high tackle on Mexx Meerdink. Down to 10 men, PSV were eventually beaten 4-0 by goals from Meerdink, Weslley Patati, Elijah Dijkstra and Ro-Zangelo Daal.

AZ claimed the Johan Cruyff Shield for only the second time in their history and controlled the game from start to finish. The result didn’t rattle Bosz though - he used Veerman’s red card as a chance to experiment with a different setup.

“We didn’t really see a normal game. We sat low in a deep block for the first half, which is not how we usually play,” Bosz told ESPN.

“I thought it was a brilliant training session in that respect, because that’s how I see it. We practised something we don’t normally do. That’s a learning experience in itself.”

Dropping into a low block didn’t work out for PSV. They were repeatedly caught out at the back and looked shaky all over. Even with those defensive issues, Bosz still praised his players for the work they put in.

“I think the boys helped each other out on the pitch. When you’re down to ten men in such a deep block, you have to communicate a lot and pass the ball around a lot. That’s something new, but they did it well.”

PSV kick off their Eredivisie campaign on Saturday, August 8th away at Fortuna Sittard. As for sticking with a low block, Bosz said it will depend on how the game situation unfolds.

“Maybe if we get a quick red card again.”
