Jon Rahm refuses DP World Tour's 6-event demand

Jon Rahm accuses DP World Tour of 'extorting players' over LIV Golf deal, refuses 6-event demand, citing $3m fines. Rahm open to 4 events, per membership rules.

“They're asking me to play a minimum of six events, and they dictate where two of those have to be...”

Jon Rahm is having a heated dispute with the DP World Tour, accusing them of “extorting players” over a deal to settle fines for playing on the LIV tour. The tour had offered a deal to eight LIV players, including Tyrrell Hatton, allowing them to play on both tours in 2026, but Rahm refused, citing unfair conditions.

Rahm, a two-time major winner, is being asked to play six DP World Tour events, with two chosen by the tour, and pay fines reportedly around $3 million. He's offered to play four events, the minimum required for membership, but the tour hasn't agreed. Rahm's decision puts his Ryder Cup eligibility at risk if he loses his appeal.

Tyrrell Hatton, one of Rahm's Ryder Cup and LIV Legion XIII teammates, was part of the group of eight.

“I don't like the conditions,” Rahm toldl reporters ahead of this week's LIV Hong Kong tournament.

“They're asking me to play a minimum of six events, and they dictate where two of those have to be, amongst other things that I don't agree with.”

Jon Rahm has reportedly accumulated fines of around $3 million for playing in LIV Golf events without permission from the DP World Tour. He's refusing to pay, citing “extortion and objecting to the tour's conditions, which include playing a minimum of six events, with two venues chosen by the tour.

Rahm argues he's always played four events, including the Spanish Open, and shouldn't be forced to play more. He's offered to sign if the requirement is lowered to four events, but the DP World Tour hasn't agreed. This standoff puts his Ryder Cup eligibility at risk.

“Two years ago I was asked to appeal the fines, so they could figure this out,” said Rahm at Hong Kong Golf Club.

"I did and we're running into more problems right now... I don't know what game they're trying to play,” said Rahm.

“They're using our impact in tournaments and fining us.

"(The DP World Tour is) trying to benefit both ways from what we have to offer, and it's just, in a way, they're extorting players like myself and young players that have nothing to do with the politics of the game.

"So I don't like the situation and I'm not going to agree to that.”

Rahm's stance is that he'd play four events, aligning with current membership rules, but draws the line at six. He's pushing back against the DP World Tour's demands, calling it “extortion.”

“I did tell them, funnily enough, lower that to four events, like the minimum says, and I'll sign tonight,” said Rahm.

“They haven't agreed to that. I just refuse to play six events. I don't want to, and that's not what the rules say.”
