Al-Sadd coach Roberto Mancini won't be present for Friday's Qatar Stars League match against Umm-Salal due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East disrupting air travel. Mancini left Qatar for a family medical issue but can't return.
The club stated that coordination is ongoing to facilitate Mancini's return at the earliest opportunity. In his absence, Sergio Alegre will take charge of the team.
The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran escalated on February 28th, with strikes launched on Iranian targets, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and Gulf countries. This has led to widespread disruptions, including air travel chaos and postponed sporting events, such as AFC Champions League Elite round-of-16 games.
The situation remains volatile, with Iran threatening to target energy infrastructure if attacked, potentially disrupting global oil supplies. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route, has been virtually closed, causing severe bottlenecks and impacting global trade.
“Following the recent developments in the region, Mancini departed as scheduled. However, due to the flight situation, he has not yet been able to return.”
Sergio Alegre will take the reins at Al-Sadd as Roberto Mancini is unable to return to Qatar due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East disrupting air travel. Mancini had left the country for a family medical issue.
Qatar had halted all sports competitions on March 1st after Iranian missile and drone strikes prompted authorities to close the country's airspace. “Coordination will continue for the coach's return at the earliest available opportunity,” the club added.
