Markram's masterclass sends South Africa to T20 World Cup semi-finals...

South Africa is on a roll, with their latest win being a 9-wicket thrashing of West Indies, following their 76-run victory over India. This commanding performance puts them practically through to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Meanwhile, West Indies faces a must-win game against India, which is essentially a quarterfinal match, on Sunday. India needs to win their remaining matches, including the one against Zimbabwe, to stay in contention.

South Africa's path to the semi-finals looks almost certain, but there's a slim chance they could be knocked out. For that to happen, Zimbabwe would need to beat both India and South Africa, while West Indies would have to defeat India, resulting in all three teams having four points. Even then, South Africa's strong net run rate should keep them in contention.

South Africa's bowling attack proved too strong for West Indies, reducing them to 83-7. However, a remarkable partnership between Jason Holder (49 off 31 balls) and Romario Shepherd (52 off 37 balls) helped West Indies recover to a respectable total of 176-8 .

West Indies' aggressive batting approach seemed off the mark on a great batting wicket, with some reckless shots leaving many puzzled. However, Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd's measured hitting at the end showcased how effective smart batting can be, rescuing West Indies from a precarious 83-7 to a respectable 176-8.

“I thought we bowled nicely,” Markram said. “A team like West Indies will take the game to you. The pitch was tacky and 'stoppy'. With the early nip, we wanted to keep the ball up. The steep bounce came from the tackiness.

“Fortunately we ended up on the right side of the toss. A lot of credit to the bowlers. It felt like while we were bowling, the wicket kept getting better and better. Towards the back end, when we went full and yorkers and change of pace, it didn't work.”

Lungi Ngidi was in top form with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 30 runs in his 4 overs. Kagiso Rabada also had an impressive spell, grabbing 2 wickets for 22 runs in 4 overs, his best performance of the tournament.

South Africa's batsmen played with precision and power, unlike West Indies. Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock put on a solid opening partnership, scoring 95 runs off 48 balls with controlled power hitting. De Kock contributed 47 runs off 24 balls.

After De Kock's departure, Ryan Rickelton joined the fray, smashing an unbeaten 45 off 28 deliveries. This helped South Africa cruise to a comfortable victory.

“Ricks (Rickelton) has come and made No. 3 his own,” Markram said. “No step in this competition is easy. Hopefully we get through (to the semifinals). Will be great, we don't think too far ahead but boys have got used to the conditions here.”
