UEL: Lyon's Late Show Secures Win Over Go Ahead Eagles

Lyon Vs Go Ahead Eagles
Lyon sees off Go Ahead Eagles 2-1 in Europa League

Lyon beat Go Ahead Eagles 2-1 in the Europa League, with Afonso Moreira scoring the opening goal.

In the end, Lyon did just enough to secure a 2-1 win, their fifth in six Europa League games this season...

Lyon made a flying start to their Europa League match against Go Ahead Eagles, with three goals scored within the first 11 minutes. The French side's strong performance earned them a 2-1 win, securing their place at the top of the league phase table.

Afonso Moreira gave Lyon the perfect start, tapping home Tyler Morton's cutback after a neat passing move. However, their lead was short-lived, as Corentin Tolisso's mistake allowed Melle Meulensteen to dispossess him, and Milan Smit capitalized with a clinical finish - his eighth goal of the season.

Lyon quickly regained the lead, though, when Jari De Busser parried Ainsley Maitland-Niles' long-range shot into the path of Pavel Sulc, who buried the rebound, restoring Lyon's advantage.

Lyon's momentum continued into the half-time whistle, with Martin Satriano hitting the post after Jari De Busser expertly saved Afonso Moreira's initial effort. The hosts continued to push, and Moreira nearly completed a hat-trick early in the second half, shooting just wide from the edge of the area.

Go Ahead Eagles pushed for an equalizer, encouraged by Lyon's wastefulness in front of goal. Jakob Breum had their best chance, unleashing a strike from distance that Remy Descamps had to stop.

In the end, Lyon did just enough to secure a 2-1 win, their fifth in six Europa League games this season. The French side has won all three of their home fixtures so far, and they remain at the top of the league phase table.

Lyon maintained their impressive record, remaining the only team in the Europa League this season to not concede a goal after half-time. French teams are now unbeaten in their last seven Europa League meetings against Dutch teams, with Go Ahead Eagles failing to secure a win in their last six away matches.

Despite the loss, Go Ahead Eagles can still secure a playoff spot by the end of the league phase.
