FIFA Club World Cup: Chelsea Beats Esperance 3-0, Advances to Next Round

Chelsea secures a 3-0 victory over Esperance de Tunis, advancing to the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup. Learn more about the match.

Chelsea bounced back from their loss to Flamengo, cruising into the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup with a convincing 3-0 win over Esperance de Tunis at Lincoln Financial Field. This victory marked the fifth time in their last six wins that Chelsea kept a clean sheet.

Despite struggling to break down Esperance's solid defense in the sweltering Philadelphia heat, Chelsea's young side eventually found their footing. Tosin Adarabioyo broke the deadlock with a header in first-half stoppage time, before Liam Delap scored his first Chelsea goal just two minutes later. Tyrique George sealed the win with a late strike in stoppage time, capitalizing on a mistake by Esperance's goalkeeper.

The win was a testament to Chelsea's depth, with manager Enzo Maresca making eight changes to the side that lost to Flamengo. Players like Delap, Enzo Fernandez, and Malo Gusto led the charge, with Delap's impressive performance sparking conversations about his future role in the team. Chelsea will now face Benfica in the next round, a rematch of the 2013 Europa League final.

The North Africans, seemingly more accustomed to the conditions, displayed greater sharpness in attack, but both teams found it challenging to create clear scoring opportunities in a tightly contested match. The game remained relatively uneventful until Liam Delap registered the first shot on target after 15 minutes, although Bechir Ben Said comfortably saved his effort from the edge of the box.

The Esperance goalkeeper, Bechir Ben Said, was tested by Josh Acheampong's low drive, but he made the save. However, he couldn't repeat the feat when Tosin Adarabioyo headed home in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. The goal came from a set-piece, an area where Chelsea had found most success, with Tosin left unmarked to nod home Enzo Fernandez's delivery.

Falling behind proved a significant obstacle for Esperance, given their recent trend of clean sheets in most matches. The task seemed insurmountable when Liam Delap scored his first Chelsea goal just two minutes after Tosin Adarabioyo's header, showcasing brilliant strength and control to beat two defenders before slotting into the far corner. This second goal in stoppage time left Esperance demoralized, resulting in a subdued second half.

Chelsea maintained their confidence and dominance, but opportunities to extend their lead slipped away. Enzo Fernandez and Christopher Nkunku both missed chances, firing over from promising positions, while Noni Madueke's effort flashed just wide of the far post.

As the game slowed down, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made several substitutions to keep his squad fresh for the knockout stages. One of these substitutes, Tyrique George, sealed the win with a long-range shot that slipped through the hands of Esperance goalkeeper Ben Said in stoppage time. With this 3-0 victory, Chelsea advances to the last 16, where they'll face Benfica, while Esperance is eliminated from the competition, finishing with a sixth loss in nine matches.
