Bayern Munich Falls to Benfica in FIFA Club World Cup Upset

Benfica secures a historic 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the FIFA Club World Cup, ending Bayern's unbeaten run and booking their spot in the knockout stages.

Benfica pulled off a stunning 1-0 win over Bayern Munich, ending a 13-match winless streak against the German champions. This victory secured Benfica's spot in the knockout stages of the FIFA Club World Cup as group winners. Despite already qualifying for the next round, Bayern Munich suffered their first-ever defeat in the competition under a heavily rotated lineup led by Vincent Kompany's strategic changes.

The match started slowly, but Benfica soon asserted their dominance, threatening Bayern's top spot in Group C. Within 10 minutes, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was called into action, denying Ángel Di María's effort. The Bayern captain couldn't make another save on the next chance, as Andreas Schjelderup scored with a calm finish from Fredrik Aursnes' cutback, leaving Neuer beaten.

Bayern's response in the first half was underwhelming, and they went into the break without registering a single shot on target. After halftime, Bayern introduced Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, and Michael Olise, with Olise making an immediate impact by drawing a foul that resulted in a yellow card for Benfica's Nicolás Otamendi.

Bayern's fortunes began to change after the break, with Leroy Sané having a promising chance when Kimmich's brilliant pass found him behind the defense. However, Anatoliy Trubin made an outstanding save to deny Sané, and then blocked Thomas Müller's follow-up attempt.

At the other end of the field, Benfica substitute Kerem Aktürkoğlu had a promising opportunity thwarted by a brilliant save from Manuel Neuer. Shortly after, Bayern thought they had scored their first goal when Joshua Kimmich's low drive from the edge of the box found the bottom corner. However, the goal was disallowed as Harry Kane was deemed to have obstructed Neuer's view while in an offside position.

Benfica's goal seemed to be under siege as Bayern pushed for an equalizer. Anatoliy Trubin made a crucial save to deny Aleksandar Pavlović's close-range effort. In the final moments, Trubin again proved himself to be exceptional, denying Leroy Sané with another impressive save after Harry Kane had threaded the ball through to him. Trubin's heroics ultimately secured the win for Benfica.

Anatoliy Trubin's heroics helped Benfica extend its unbeaten streak to 16 matches and secure a spot in the last 16, where they'll likely face Chelsea. Meanwhile, Bayern's five-match winning streak was snapped, and they'll move on to face Flamengo in the next round.
