Bayern Munich dominated Auckland City in their FIFA Club World Cup opener, winning 10-0 at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. A second-half hat-trick from Jamal Musiala was the highlight of the match, which showcased the significant gap between European and Oceanian football.
Despite predictions of a heavy defeat, Auckland City started brightly, with Kingsley Coman scoring the opener after just five minutes, nodding the ball inside the near post. However, the visitors' early promise soon faded as Bayern's superior quality and depth took over.
Auckland City showed glimpses of promise with some encouraging attacks, but their resistance crumbled as expected just before the 20-minute mark. Thomas Muller set up two quick goals, first assisting Sascha Boey with a header that Boey smashed across goal, and then providing a cross from which Olise scored at the back post after Harry Kane's near miss.

The rout began quickly, with Bayern making it 2-0 and then 3-0 and 4-0 against the overwhelmed Auckland City. Kingsley Coman's clever move allowed him to pass into the far post past Conor Tracey.
A brief respite followed as Auckland showed some composure, with goalkeeper Conor Tracey making a great save to deny a powerful Harry Kane strike.
Bayern added two more goals before halftime, with Thomas Muller volleying Michael Olise's cross into the net, and Olise himself scoring with a beautifully bent shot into the far corner from the right.
Despite the 6-0 deficit, Auckland City showed good spirits after the restart, with Dylan Manickum leading a promising attack. Bayern continued to create chances, but wayward finishing and impressive saves from Conor Tracey kept the scoreline intact until Jamal Musiala, who came off the bench, curled a shot into the net from the edge of the area.
Musiala was fouled in the box by Den Heijer but quickly composed himself to score the resulting penalty. He then capitalized on a misplaced pass from Tracey, finishing clinically one-on-one to complete a swift hat-trick in just 16 minutes.
The only question remaining was whether Bayern could reach double figures, which they did with a minute left, thanks to Thomas Muller's tap-in from Serge Gnabry's looped pass.
Despite the opponent's significant difference in quality, Vincent Kompany will likely be pleased with the record-breaking win. The 10-0 margin is the largest in Club World Cup history, surpassing previous records.
Auckland City, accustomed to success, will need to regroup after this heavy defeat. Having won the continental treble four times, they're set to face tough challenges against Benfica and Boca Juniors in the competition.
