Paris Saint-Germain made a strong statement in the Club World Cup with a 4-0 victory over 10-man Atletico Madrid in their Group B opener.

Atletico had an early chance when Julian Alvarez's free-kick curled just wide of the post, but PSG soon took control, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia forcing Jan Oblak into a save in the 17th minute.

Jan Oblak made a great save to deny Kvaratskhelia, but two minutes later, he couldn't stop Fabian Ruiz from scoring. Ruiz received a pass from Kvaratskhelia and shot the ball into the bottom corner, giving PSG the lead.

After taking the lead, PSG dominated possession, but both teams struggled to maintain their rhythm in the hot Californian weather, showing only brief moments of brilliance.

Atletico Madrid pushed back, with Antoine Griezmann striking a clean shot at Gianluigi Donnarumma, but their efforts were soon nullified as PSG swiftly countered.

Kvaratskhelia played a key role in the counter-attack, setting up Vitinha, who skillfully guided the ball past Jan Oblak to double PSG's lead.

PSG's attacking flair was evident early in the second half as Nuno Mendes broke through Atletico's defense and set up Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose curling shot hit the crossbar after being tipped by Jan Oblak.

Atletico thought they'd gotten back into the game when Julian Alvarez scored, but VAR intervened, disallowing the goal due to a foul by Koke in the buildup.

Atletico's hopes of a comeback were severely dented 11 minutes from time when Clement Lenglet was given a second yellow card for protesting a perceived foul on Senny Mayulu, leaving Atleti down to 10 men.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Atletico created their best chance of the game shortly after, but Alexander Sorlot's shot from close range flew over the bar.

PSG sealed their victory with a third goal, as Senny Mayulu scored after Atleti failed to clear a cross from Achraf Hakimi, directing the ball into the bottom corner.

The win marked the first competitive head-to-head victory for PSG over Atletico Madrid, with Luis Enrique beating Diego Simeone for the 10th time.

Atletico's miserable evening was made even worse in added time when VAR awarded a penalty to PSG due to a handball by Robin Le Normand. Lee Kang-in sealed the win with a clinical finish from the spot, making it 4-0.

The comprehensive victory will likely cement PSG's status as favorites in the tournament, having navigated their toughest group stage test with ease.
