Manchester City Duo Rodri and Haaland Resume Training After Injuries

Rodri and Haaland are progressing well in their recoveries, with Rodri's return to play dependent on medical approval, according to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola. Find out more.

Manchester City's Pep Guardiola confirmed that midfielder Rodri has returned to training after a serious knee injury that kept him sidelined since September. Rodri underwent surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament, an absence that significantly impacted City's pursuit of a fifth consecutive Premier League title.

Guardiola stated that Rodri is progressing well in his recovery, participating in training sessions and feeling better each day. However, the coach emphasized the need for caution to avoid setbacks or further injuries. Rodri's return to the pitch will depend on the medical team's assessment, with Guardiola awaiting the green light from doctors before granting him playing minutes.

Current Status:

  • Rodri: Back in training, but return to play contingent on medical clearance
  • Erling Haaland: Also returning to training after an injury, Guardiola says he's “getting better” but doesn't expect him to play against Wolves this weekend
  • Other Injuries: John Stones and Nathan Ake remain out, while Oscar Bobb's fitness is being monitored to avoid rushing his return

Manchester City's Rodri is set to return to training after a long absence due to injury. The 28-year-old Ballon d'Or winner's recovery timeline will be guided by the club's medical staff, with a return date yet to be determined.

“We are very happy that he is back on the grass,” said Pep Guardiola. “The moment the physio and doctor say that Rodri can start to play minutes, he will start to play minutes. But the doctors have to tell me. It was a difficult injury. It was seven months to eleven months, more or less, the doctors said.”

Meanwhile, Erling Haaland has also resumed training after an ankle injury that kept him sidelined since March 30. However, he's unlikely to feature in Friday's match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Erling Haaland is progressing well in his recovery from an ankle injury, according to Pep Guardiola. “He feels really good, every day he's making sessions and sessions, but we have to make the step to avoid making a step backwards and being injured again.” Haaland has missed several games, including the FA Cup semi-final win over Nottingham Forest, and is unlikely to feature against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

City face a crucial match against Wolves, who are on a six-match winning streak. Guardiola acknowledged Wolves' impressive form, saying, “I'm not surprised. In the last few years, I think they have always had really good players, and now they've had an incredible run. It's quite similar when Newcastle came a month ago and Aston Villa came. It's another final for us. We have four finals, and now we go for the first one.” City currently sit fourth in the Premier League, battling for Champions League qualification.
