Rodri's outstanding performances earn him Ballon d'Or, but Manchester City faces Tottenham in Carabao Cup without key midfielder due to ACL injury.
Manchester City's Rodri took center stage at the prestigious Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris, emerging victorious and claiming the coveted award. The midfielder's impressive trophy haul last season played a pivotal role in his win.
Rodri's 2023-2024 campaign was nothing short of phenomenal, with Manchester City lifting the Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. Additionally, he contributed to Spain's triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, solidifying his position as a top contender for the Ballon d'Or.
Vinicius Jr of Real Madrid was considered Rodri's strongest competition, but the Brazilian winger skipped the ceremony after learning he wouldn't take home the award. Notably absent was fellow nominee Jude Bellingham, Vinicius' teammate at Real Madrid, who also opted not to attend.
Rodri's historic Ballon d'Or win marks the first time a midfielder has claimed the award since Luka Modric in 2018, breaking the dominance of forwards Lionel Messi (three-time winner) and Karim Benzema (one-time winner).
Notably, Robert Lewandowski was denied the opportunity to win in 2020 when the award was cancelled, despite being the frontrunner.
Upon accepting the award, an emotional Rodri expressed his gratitude, saying, “A very special day, for me, my family, and my country.” He also highlighted his dedication to continuous improvement, adding, “I try to improve every day, try to level up my game.”
When questioned about his recovery from injury, Rodri emphasized his focus on self-care, stating, “I am just trying to take care of myself. Rest, enjoy the free time with my family, and come back stronger.”
Manchester City midfielder Rodri faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a season-ending ACL injury. This setback has significantly impacted City's defensive solidity.
Without Rodri, City has struggled to secure clean sheets, managing only two this season, with just one coming in his absence. His influence on the team's defensive resilience is evident.
Despite his current injury, Rodri's outstanding performances throughout the calendar year have earned him the prestigious Ballon d'Or award.
As Rodri focuses on his rehabilitation, City prepares to face Tottenham in the Carabao Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday without their key midfielder.
