Eintracht Frankfurt draws 1-1 with FSV Mainz, keeping their Champions League hopes alive but failing to secure qualification this weekend.
Eintracht Frankfurt drew 1-1 with FSV Mainz, keeping their Champions League hopes alive but failing to secure qualification this weekend. The draw moved Frankfurt four points clear of fourth-placed SC Freiburg.
Frankfurt started strong, with Hugo Ekitiké testing Mainz goalkeeper Lasse Rieß in the opening minute. Rieß, making his senior debut, made an impressive save to deny Ekitiké, but Frankfurt eventually took the lead before Mainz equalized to extend their unbeaten home run to 11 games.
FSV Mainz's Dominik Kohr suffered a serious-looking knee injury, forcing Stefan Bell's substitution. Shortly after, Frankfurt took the lead through Rasmus Kristensen's fortunate finish, set up by a pass from Hugo Ekitiké that capitalized on a ricochet.
Mainz's woes continued as Danny da Costa was also substituted due to injury, with Silvan Widmer taking over as captain. The match was briefly interrupted when Frankfurt fans threw paper balls at Mainz's Nadiem Amiri during a corner kick.
The points are shared in Mainz.

Mainz thought they had equalized in stoppage time when Lee Jae-sung headed home Anthony Caci's pinpoint cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Undeterred, Mainz came out strong in the second half and equalized on 57 minutes. Silvan Widmer's throw-in was flicked to the back post, where Rasmus Kristensen inadvertently collided with Jonathan Burkardt, causing the ball to loop out of Kevin Trapp's reach and into the net.
The equalizer gave Mainz new momentum, and they began to sense a possible win, with the home crowd feeding off the energy. Despite Hugo Ekitiké still posing a threat for Frankfurt, Mainz looked more promising as the match progressed.
The match remained intense until the end, with both teams creating few clear chances. Hugo Ekitiké had another opportunity to win it for Frankfurt, but his dinked shot went just wide of the post. Jonathan Burkardt also had a late chance, but his effort was off-target.
The draw left Mainz winless in seven Bundesliga games, two points shy of European qualification with two matches remaining. Frankfurt, on the other hand, needs just one more win to secure a Champions League spot for the 2025/26 season.
