UCL: PSG Hold On to Beat Aston Villa, Reach Champions League Semis

Aston Villa's valiant fightback wasn't enough as PSG held on for a 5-4 aggregate win, securing a spot in the Champions League semi-finals. Villa won 3-2 on the night but couldn't overcome the deficit.

Aston Villa's thrilling fightback fell agonizingly short as PSG booked their spot in the Champions League semi-finals. Despite a stunning 3-2 win at Villa Park, the English side lost 5-4 on aggregate. The hosts started strong, with the stadium rocking before kick-off, and Villa created early pressure on the PSG goal.

However, the Ligue 1 champions' experience shone through, and they withstood Villa's barrage in the opening 10 minutes. PSG then caught Villa off guard with a lightning-quick counterattack down the left, culminating in Achraf Hakimi hammering home the opening goal after Emiliano Martinez fumbled Bradley Barcola's cross.

Trailing 5-1 on aggregate, Aston Villa faced a daunting task. The deficit grew larger when Nuno Mendes scored PSG's second goal, finishing a swift counterattack with a shot that crashed in off the post. Villa refused to give up, and their persistence paid off when Youri Tielemans' effort deflected off Pacho, leaving Gianluigi Donnarumma beaten.

The hosts continued to push after halftime, and the atmosphere at Villa Park reached a fever pitch when John McGinn unleashed a stunning shot that dipped over Donnarumma and into the top corner, sparking a frenzied celebration among the home fans. Despite their valiant effort, Villa ultimately fell short, losing 5-4 on aggregate.

PSG's composure wavered under Villa's relentless pressure, and the aggregate deficit was cut again when Marcus Rashford's clever move allowed Ezri Konsa to score, sending the home fans into raptures. Villa continued to create chances, with Konsa, Youri Tielemans, and Marco Asensio all spurning opportunities to level the tie on aggregate.

Despite their best efforts, Villa couldn't find the fourth goal they needed, and their European campaign ended in disappointment. PSG, meanwhile, progressed to the semi-finals, where they will face either Real Madrid or Arsenal as they pursue their first Champions League title.
