Feyenoord Edges AZ 1-0 to Stay Close to PSV in Eredivisie

Feyenoord edged AZ 1-0 in the Eredivisie, with the win keeping them in contention for the title as they stay just two points behind PSV

Feyenoord continued their fine form with a hard-fought 1-0 win over AZ in Alkmaar, extending their Eredivisie win streak to four games. The Rotterdam team had already secured impressive victories over FC Twente (6-2), Go Ahead Eagles (3-2), and FC Groningen (4-1) in the previous three weeks. In contrast, AZ had struggled, failing to win their last four Eredivisie games.

The first half was relatively uneventful, but AZ's sloppy defending ultimately proved costly. A clumsy mistake in the backline led to the decisive goal, as Zico Buurmeester failed to control a pass and lost the ball. The loose ball was then headed over goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet and into his own net, giving Feyenoord the lead. This goal proved to be enough for Feyenoord to secure the win, despite a lack of further scoring opportunities.

AZ attempted to turn the tide of the match by bringing on Kees Smit and Ruben van Bommel, the son of former Barcelona and Bayern midfielder Marc van Bommel, just ten minutes after halftime. However, the substitutions failed to make an impact, and Feyenoord continued to dominate the game. The Rotterdam team appeared to double their lead twice in the second half, but goals from Anis Hadj Moussa and Julian Carranza were disallowed due to offside and foul infractions, respectively.

Feyenoord's goalkeeper, Timon Wellenreuther, made several crucial saves, including a notable effort in injury time to deny Jayden Addai. His performances, combined with AZ's inability to create scoring opportunities, secured Feyenoord's fourth consecutive Eredivisie win. Notably, Feyenoord became the second team in the last 16 seasons to win a match without recording a shot on target. The victory narrowed the gap between Feyenoord and PSV to just two points, although the reigning champions have a game in hand. Meanwhile, AZ's struggles continued, having won only one of their last seven games in all competitions, and they appear to have conceded the fight for third place.
