FC Copenhagen Coach Jacob Neestrup Explains Decision Not to Punish Rodrigo Huescas
FC Copenhagen's Mexican defender Rodrigo Huescas won't face club punishment for reckless driving, despite risking a 20-day prison sentence.
Mexican defender Rodrigo Huescas will not face punishment from FC Copenhagen despite being involved in a reckless driving incident in the Danish capital. This decision comes despite Huescas facing a potential prison sentence for his actions.
According to coach Jacob Neestrup, speaking to (link unavailable), Huescas will not receive any internal punishment from the club. This decision was made despite the severity of the incident, which saw the 21-year-old Mexican international drive 111 km per hour in a 50 km per hour zone at Kalvebod Brygge in central Copenhagen.
The incident has put Huescas at risk of a 20-day prison sentence without parole. However, FC Copenhagen has opted not to impose additional internal punishment. As explained by the club, “Internally, we have come to the conclusion that he should not receive an internal punishment. Because he will receive an appropriate punishment from the Danish judiciary.”

FC Copenhagen coach Jacob Neestrup shared his thoughts on the potential punishment for Rodrigo Huescas, stating that suspending him for one or two games would be merely symbolic. “And in my opinion, if he were not to play one or two games, it would be purely of signal value,” Neestrup said, suggesting that such a punishment would not have a significant impact.
Neestrup explained that punishing Huescas by suspending him from forthcoming matches would ultimately harm the team. He emphasized that the club's primary concern is the upcoming games, and suspending Huescas would compromise their chances of success. This perspective is reinforced by Huescas' recent performance, where he played a crucial role in setting up Magnus Mattsson's match-winning goal in their 1-0 victory over Randers FC on Monday night.
Regarding the potential consequences of Huescas' conviction, Neestrup adopted a cautious approach. ”Then we will deal with it, but I can't say anything other than it will be handled by the Danish judiciary. I feel that's the right way to go about it along with our sports director,” Neestrup said to (link unavailable), indicating that the club will wait for the outcome of the trial before making any decisions. Huescas' case is scheduled to be tried on April 28.
