Slot Keeps Feet on Ground as Liverpool Extend Lead at Top of Premier League

Arne Slot refuses to get carried away with Liverpool's title prospects, emphasizing the need to focus on one game at a time.

Liverpool's impressive form will be put to the test as they travel to Paris to face Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie next Wednesday. The Reds have been a model of consistency, remaining undefeated in 27 of their 28 league matches this season.

Their victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday was their 32nd in 43 games across all competitions, the most victories by a team in one of Europe's top five leagues. The win was secured through goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. Szoboszlai echoed manager Arne Slot's sentiments, emphasizing that there is still no room for complacency despite their 13-point lead. “After mathematically they (Arsenal) do not have any chance to get us,” the midfielder said. “We're really happy that we are 13 points clear but we just focus on ourselves. We have Champions League coming up so we have to focus on that too. We are looking forward to staying at the top of the table.”

When asked about the prospect of winning multiple trophies this season, Szoboszlai was hesitant to make any bold predictions. “When I came to Liverpool I wanted to win everything in my first season. So I don't like to talk about it,” the Hungarian midfielder said. Instead, Szoboszlai chose to focus on the team's upcoming challenges, including their Champions League clash with PSG and the League Cup final against Newcastle on March 16. “First we have a Champions League game to prepare and then a Premier League game and then we have a cup final against a really tough team. We have to be ready and focus first on Champions League and then the final after that.”

Despite the euphoric atmosphere at Anfield on Wednesday, Liverpool manager Arne Slot remained cautious about the team's Premier League title prospects. The Reds' 2-0 victory over Newcastle United extended their lead at the top of the league table to 13 points, but Slot refused to get carried away, acknowledging that the season is far from over.

When questioned about when he might start to see a glimmer of light in terms of securing the title, Slot emphasized the need to focus on the present rather than looking too far ahead. “Indeed, it's still a long way to go, 10 games, and we have the (League Cup) final of course and two very important games against Paris Saint-Germain, so we're not focused on the long term,” Slot said. This mindset reflects the manager's desire to maintain a sense of urgency and focus within the team.

Slot revealed that the players would be given a brief respite, with two days off, before returning to focus on their upcoming Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain. “And now I think the players have two days off, so Saturday, we go back and focus on Paris St Germain more than we focus on the league table in the Premier League,” Slot explained. This approach underscores the team's commitment to taking things one game at a time, rather than getting distracted by their impressive league position.

Liverpool, having topped their Champions League group, are set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their last-16 tie next Wednesday. Manager Arne Slot's team has been remarkably consistent, with only one loss in 28 league matches this season. Their impressive form has yielded 32 victories in 43 games across all competitions, the most wins by any team in Europe's top five leagues.
