EPL: Tottenham Get Back on Track with Convincing Victory Over Ipswich
Tottenham Hotspur got back on track with a 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town, with Brennan Johnson's double strike leading the charge as Spurs secured their best run since December 2023.
Tottenham Hotspur finally returned to winning ways, ending a dismal run plagued by injuries, and it was their 23-year-old Welsh winger Brennan Johnson who led the charge. Johnson had been sidelined with a calf injury since mid-January, but he made a triumphant return to the starting lineup at Ipswich Town, scoring twice in the first half as Spurs secured a convincing 4-1 victory.
The win marked Tottenham's third consecutive victory and their best run since December 2023. Despite a tumultuous season, Spurs still have plenty to play for, including a spot in the Europa League's last 16 if they can overcome AZ Alkmaar next month. The team's injury woes had previously hindered their progress, with losses in the League Cup semi-finals to Liverpool and the FA Cup fourth round at Aston Villa.

Brennan Johnson reflected on the team's resurgence, saying, “We have always tried to believe. When we have all the players back, we won the last two Premier League games and that's something we wanted to keep in mind.” Johnson also highlighted the team's improved performance, stating, “We played good football (against Ipswich) but also defended well.” He acknowledged the significance of having experienced players back in the lineup, noting, “When we have these experienced players back we know how to get on to the ball.” Johnson also referenced Tottenham's previous defeat to Ipswich, saying, “They beat us last time and that was in our heads because we didn't want to lose today.”
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou was thrilled to have Brennan Johnson back in the lineup, particularly with the team's main striker Dominic Solanke still sidelined due to injury. Postecoglou praised Johnson's scoring ability, saying, “We were always a threat. Sonny (Son Heung-min) was unplayable in that first half, and it's great to get Brennan back. He scores so many goals for us in those areas.” The manager also highlighted Johnson's clinical finishing, noting, “He knows when to arrive at the right time. He's really clinical.”
Ange Postecoglou acknowledged that Johnson had missed a significant amount of playing time due to injury, but was pleased with the team's overall performance. He stated, “He has missed a lot of football. From our perspective, these last two weeks have given us a breather and reset our football. I'm pleased the boys have embraced it.” The manager's comments reflected the team's renewed sense of purpose and momentum.

Brennan Johnson's family ties to Ipswich Town added an interesting subplot to the match, as his father David had played for the club in the late 1990s, scoring 55 goals in 131 league appearances. However, Johnson was focused solely on securing three points for Tottenham. He said, “He had a great time here. He holds the club in high accounts. For me, it was about getting the three points.” Johnson emphasized the team's ambitions, stating, “It's Tottenham Hotspur – we want to be as high as we can. We want to get right up the league.”
The victory propelled Tottenham to 12th place in the league table with 33 points, marking a significant turnaround after the team had drifted towards the bottom of the table. With renewed momentum and a revitalized squad, Spurs are now looking upwards, aiming to climb the league standings.
