Amorim Refuses to Back Down on Rashford Decision Amid Man United's Poor Form
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has reiterated his decision to leave Marcus Rashford out of his plans, despite the team's dismal form.
Manchester United's dismal form persisted on Thursday, with manager Ruben Amorim maintaining his decision to exclude forward Marcus Rashford from his plans. Rashford was conspicuous by his absence in United's 2-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, marking the fourth consecutive game he has been left out of the squad.
Rashford's omission initially stemmed from his public declaration of seeking a new challenge. Following the loss to Wolves, Amorim intimated that the England international remains outside his plans. When queried about Rashford's situation, Amorim stated, “It's always the same reason it's going to be. We have to be the same professionals, the same guys, winning or losing. Losing, I have to be stronger. I will continue with my idea until the end.”
Amorim was later asked if Rashford had demonstrated the necessary reaction to warrant reconsideration for a place in the team. In response, Amorim remarked, “If he's not here, you can make your mind up.” This ambiguous statement suggests that Rashford's future at Manchester United remains uncertain.
Manchester United's struggles continued as they suffered their fourth loss in the last five Premier League games. The team's woes were compounded when captain Bruno Fernandes received his second yellow card just two minutes into the second half, reducing United to 10 men with the score still 0-0. Even before Fernandes' dismissal, United struggled to create scoring opportunities, rarely testing the Wolves defense.
The opening goal, scored by Matheus Cunha in the 58th minute, was a comedic moment that left United goalkeeper Andre Onana embarrassed. Cunha's corner curled over Onana's head and into the net, catching the goalkeeper off guard. United manager Ruben Amorim refrained from criticizing Fernandes or Onana, instead suggesting that his goalkeeper had been impeded. Amorim stated, “I think (Onana) cannot go to the ball. He's trying to reach the ball and some guys are not even looking at the ball, but I don't want to focus on that.”
Despite the setback, Amorim found a silver lining in his team's performance, saying, “I think the good thing is we were near the goal, even with 10 men. That is a good thing, but we lost.” This glimmer of positivity was overshadowed by the team's overall disappointing display, which has raised concerns about their prospects in the Premier League.
