EPL: Wolves Compound Manchester United's Misery with 2-0 Win
Manchester United's woes deepened as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Wolves, with Bruno Fernandes seeing red and Matheus Cunha scoring a crucial goal.
Manchester United's vulnerability from set pieces continued to haunt them, as Matheus Cunha became the second player in three games to score directly from a corner against them. This latest setback led to a defeat at the hands of Wolves, who climbed out of the relegation zone with the win.
Wolves' task was made easier when Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes received his second yellow card in the 47th minute, reducing the visitors to 10 men. Despite this numerical disadvantage, United's struggles with defending set pieces proved to be their downfall. Cunha's corner kick, reminiscent of Son Hueng-min's goal for Tottenham a week ago, sailed over the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Andre Onana in a crowded six-yard box, securing the win for Wolves.
The victory was sealed in the eighth minute of added time, as Wolves launched a counterattack while Manchester United pushed for an equalizer. Matheus Cunha squared the ball to Hwang Hee-chan, who slotted it home to make it 2-0 and secure the three points for Wolves.
Manchester United's struggles with defending set pieces have been a recurring theme in recent weeks. The team's frailty in dealing with balls delivered into the box has been exploited by several opponents, including Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, and Bournemouth, resulting in five defeats in seven games across all competitions. Wolves' Ruben Amorim has now collected seven points from his six league games in charge, while new Wolves boss Vitor Pereira has made a strong start with six points from his first two games.
Manchester United's woes have been compounded by the suspension of Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte for their upcoming home game against Newcastle on 30 December. Fernandes will miss the match due to his red card, while Ugarte's fifth yellow card of the season has also earned him a suspension.
