Roberto Mancini Dismisses Rumors of Interference in Saudi Arabia
Former Saudi Arabia manager Roberto Mancini has denied claims of interference during his tenure, saying he was happy with his experience.
Former Saudi Arabia manager Roberto Mancini has vehemently denied rumors of external interference during his tenure as the national team's head coach. The 60-year-old Italian addressed these claims on Thursday, dismissing speculation about his departure from the role.
Mancini parted ways with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation on October 24, after a 14-month stint in charge. He had taken over the reins from Herve Renard, who has since returned to lead the team in the Arabian Gulf Cup, currently underway in Kuwait.
During Roberto Mancini's tenure as Saudi Arabia's manager, the team faced a disappointing exit from the Asian Cup, losing to South Korea in a penalty shootout in the round of 16 earlier this year.
Mancini took to the X social media platform to address rumors of interference during his time in Saudi Arabia, stating, “I would like to say this for the last time, during my career there was absolutely no interference in the selection of players and I am happy with my experience and work in Saudi Arabia.” He also directed a message to certain media outlets, saying, “Some media outlets should focus on their teams and stop spreading rumors about me and the Saudi national team.”
Saudi Arabia, the host nation for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, currently occupies second place in the Arabian Gulf Cup Group B, with three points to their name. They trail leader Bahrain by three points, with Bahrain having already secured a semifinal spot with one match remaining.
In their final round-robin match, Saudi Arabia will face off against third-placed Iraq, who also have three points. The outcome of this match will determine which team advances to the semifinals.
