Chelsea blow as Joao Pedro suffers thigh injury in training

Chelsea forward Joao Pedro will be out for a few weeks with a thigh injury picked up in training, manager Xabi Alonso confirms.

“He has an injury on his thigh, and he is going to be out for a few weeks...”

Chelsea forward Joao Pedro is expected to be out for a few weeks after sustaining a thigh injury in training, manager Xabi Alonso said on Tuesday ahead of the club's League Cup tie against Liverpool.

The 25-year-old Brazilian sat out Saturday's defeat to Tottenham Hotspur after picking up the injury in training on Friday.

“He has an injury on his thigh, and he is going to be out for a few weeks,” Alonso told reporters. “Let's see how many; we don't want to predict on that, but he's not ready for the next games.”

Pedro has enjoyed a strong start to the season, scoring five goals and providing three assists in seven appearances across all competitions.

Alonso admitted the Brazil international would be a loss, but said Chelsea have enough depth to cover his absence.

Chelsea travel to Liverpool for their League Cup last-16 tie on Wednesday before hosting Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.
