EPL: Palmer Sent Off as Tottenham Secure First Away Win at Chelsea's Expense

Chelsea Vs Spurs
Palmer sees red as Spurs stun Chelsea for rare Bridge win

Chelsea's six-game unbeaten home run came to a soggy and sorry end at Stamford Bridge as a calamitous own goal from Mike Penders and a late Mathys Tel strike - either side of Cole Palmer's dismissal - handed Tottenham a rare 2-0 victory in West London.

Tottenham shock Chelsea 2-0 to claim historic Stamford Bridge victory...

Tottenham Hotspur recorded only their second league win in 37 trips to Stamford Bridge, as they pulled off a stunning 2-0 Premier League victory over Chelsea.

Both teams arrived on the back of wins last time out - while that has become fairly routine for Chelsea this season, Tottenham's victory over Coventry was their first of the campaign.

Played out in torrential rain in London, the opening half was a cagey affair, with Spurs seeing most of the ball while Chelsea waited to capitalise on any slip in possession.

The Blues, missing leading scorer Joao Pedro, carved out the first opening when Cole Palmer's curling effort destined for the top corner was tipped over by Antonin Kinsky, before Mohamed Kudus dragged wide from a similar position at the opposite end.

Spurs grew more assured in possession as the half wore on, and created arguably the best chance of the opening period when Omar Marmoush shot straight at Mike Penders in the Chelsea goal.

The hosts, however, began to pose a threat as half-time neared, with Kinsky pushing away a Jordan Henderson effort from just inside the box before collecting Pedro Neto's low strike.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with Tottenham controlling possession but offering little penetration. The next effort on target did not come until just past the hour, when Neto fired straight at Kinsky from a promising position.

The weather did little to help, summed up when Micky van de Ven, Mateus Fernandes and Palmer were all shown yellow cards following two successive flashpoints.

In the end, it was a howler from Chelsea's stand-in goalkeeper Penders that finally broke the deadlock.

The Belgian was under little pressure when a corner dropped to him, but his attempted punch somehow looped behind him and into his own net.

Matters deteriorated further for Xabi Alonso's side when Palmer was shown a second yellow for a late challenge on Conor Gallagher.

With three minutes left, Tottenham made their numerical advantage count when Mathys Tel burst into the Chelsea half, evaded Maxence Lacroix and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner beyond Penders' despairing dive.

It was Tottenham's first away victory of the season, lifting them to 12th in the table. Chelsea, meanwhile, saw their six-match unbeaten home run come to an end, and will need to regroup quickly with Liverpool and Manchester United next up.
