Atletico Madrid made it eight games unbeaten in all competitions as Julian Alvarez's trademark finish sealed a hard-fought 1-0 win over a resilient Deportivo A Coruna side at the Metropolitano.
Alvarez fires Atletico Madrid to narrow win over Deportivo A Coruna...
Atletico Madrid stretched their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions with seven wins and one draw, edging past Deportivo A Coruna at the Metropolitano to close the gap on leaders Barcelona to just two points in the LaLiga title race.
Atletico dominated the opening 45 minutes, with Julian Alvarez at the heart of everything. The Argentine looked sharp from the start, first dragging a shot wide from the edge of the area.
He then showed quick footwork to create space before teeing up Pablo Barrios, who blazed his effort over the bar.
Deportivo, however, soon reminded everyone why they had suffered just two defeats in LaLiga heading into tonight with two wins and five draws to their name, and they began to string together some tidy passages of play.
They almost snatched a shock lead when Yeremay Hernandez's free-kick was parried by Jan Oblak, only for the ever-reliable Slovenian to react brilliantly and deny Lorenzo Amatucci on the follow-up.
In truth, though, that was as good as it got for the visitors before the break, and Atletico spurned more chances to go ahead before half-time, with Lee Kang-in and Morten Hjulmand both firing over.
It did not take them long to finally break the deadlock after the restart, however. Alejandro Grimaldo whipped in a dangerous delivery and Alvarez slowly mending his relationship with the club after a failed move in the summer marked his second game in a row with a goal, slotting home with a trademark finish into the bottom corner.
That was the ninth time in 10 LaLiga games that Atletico have scored first this season, and they looked like doubling their advantage when Alex Baena's effort was comfortably gathered by Leo Roman, before centre-back David Hancko tried his luck from distance and narrowly cleared the crossbar.
Despite holding just a slender lead, the hosts looked comfortable and turned to their bench for fresh legs, with Alexander Sorloth among those introduced. The Norwegian almost made an instant impact, stinging Roman's palm with a rocket on goal.
As was the case against Espanyol last weekend, though, one goal proved enough for Atletico to secure an eighth league win of the campaign with one draw and one defeat as they stretched their unbeaten run in this fixture to 15 competitive meetings, winning 12 and drawing three.

Deportivo showed plenty of fight but ultimately lacked cutting edge, with their winless streak now extended to six matches, drawing three and losing three.
