Serie A: Fabregas' Triple Change Pays Off As Como Beat Sassuolo

Como make history after comfortable Sassuolo win

Cesc Fabregas' half-time triple substitution inspired Como to a 2-0 win over Sassuolo, with Douvikas' brace moving the Lariani up to fourth in Serie A.

Como Continue Home Dominance. Douvikas brace fires Como past Sassuolo and into top four...

Como maintained their unbeaten home record this season (W4, D1) with a 2-0 win over Sassuolo, who extended their miserable away run — now 11 Serie A games without a win on the road (D3, L8), the second-longest such drought in the division.

Buoyed by their 4-1 thrashing of Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, Como made a fast start and thought they had taken the lead after just seven minutes.

Lucas Da Cunha latched onto a ball over the top, raced clear down the right and drilled home at the near post, only for the offside flag to cut short the celebrations.

At the other end, Stefano Turati handed a start ahead of Arijanet Muric was kept busy, pulling off sharp saves to deny Anastasios Douvikas and Maxence Caqueret from close range, with the latter still searching for his first goal of the season.

Sassuolo posed problems of their own in the first half and thought they had broken the deadlock when Darryl Bakola smashed a thumping strike into the top corner for what would have been his first goal in Italian football.

The teenager’s celebrations were quickly cut short, though, with another offside flag denying him as both sides headed into the break level.

With Como having conceded six of their seven Serie A goals before half-time this season, going into the break goalless was far from the worst outcome for the in-form hosts.

Cesc Fabregas was clearly still unhappy, though, making three changes at the break and his side were ahead within four minutes of the restart when Douvikas turned in Caqueret's low cross from the flank.

Buoyed by the breakthrough, Como pressed for a second and the same duo combined again on the hour mark Caqueret pouncing on a Sassuolo giveaway before teeing up Douvikas, who poked home his fifth goal in four games.

Sassuolo had arrived as the only side in the division to both score and concede in every league match this season, but offering little in response after falling behind, that stat will have provided scant consolation.
