Anthony Edwards Injury Update: Wolves Guard Set For Surgery After Hot Start

Anthony Edwards
Edwards' franchise record start halted by knee surgery

From a franchise-record scoring burst to a sudden halt, Anthony Edwards' red-hot start has been interrupted at the worst possible time and now Minnesota must prove it can stay afloat without its No. 1.

Timberwolves to survive without Edwards? Ball, Dosunmu to step up...

The Minnesota Timberwolves will be without Anthony Edwards for up to two months, as the star guard is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. The setback comes despite a red-hot start to the season for the 25-year-old.

Minnesota sits at 3-1 to begin the 2026/27 season with Finals aspirations, and Edwards has been fueling that optimism. Through four games, he is averaging 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 48.1% from the field, giving this core its best chance yet to make a deep run.

Edwards has taken his game to another level to start the year, averaging 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists through four games. His 133 total points over that stretch is the most in Timberwolves franchise history to open a season.

Unfortunately, early-season momentum can be fragile, and like every team, Minnesota must learn to weather injuries. That has become a major theme around the NBA already, and now the Timberwolves are the latest to be hit.

This time it is Edwards. NBA Insider Shams Charania reported Tuesday that the star guard will miss up to two months and is scheduled to undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his ailing right knee, an issue that has clearly been bothering him.

Edwards missed 21 games last season during his rise to superstardom, but Minnesota stayed afloat at 12-9 in that span. With LaMelo Ball added this offseason, the Timberwolves believe they have a playmaker capable of steering the ship while their star is out.

It has been a team effort through four games. Jaden McDaniels (15.0 PPG), Ball (14.8 PPG, 6.3 APG), Terrence Shannon Jr. (13.0 PPG), Ayo Dosunmu (12.0 PPG) and Jonathan Kuminga (11.5 PPG) have all stepped up to deliver balanced, dominant performances around Edwards.

It's unlikely Minnesota makes an outside move this early, with Ayo Dosunmu expected to slide into the starting two-guard spot and rookie Isaiah Evans set for a significantly expanded role. On paper this roster isn't built to win a championship without No. 1, but if the Timberwolves can stay steady over the next 6-8 weeks, navigating this stretch could leave them even stronger by the end of the season.
