Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a ruptured ACL in the Red Devils’ last-16 win over the United States, the team announced Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, the medical examinations have confirmed that Amadou has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament,” Belgium team doctor Brahim Hacene said in a statement.

“This is devastating news, both for him personally and for the team.”

The statement added that after consulting with Aston Villa, Onana will stay with the Belgium squad through at least their quarter-final match against Spain on Friday.

Onana went off in the 21st minute of Belgium’s 4-1 win over the U.S. after landing awkwardly. Despite the injury, he was back on the pitch on crutches to celebrate with his teammates after the match.
