During Tuesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani became the first Japanese-born player in MLB history to hit 300 career home runs.

Ohtani, 32, launched his 20th homer of the season off Rockies pitcher Michael Lorenzen in the bottom of the first inning.

The home run bumped his season average to .297 and his OPS to .956. Ohtani now has 56 RBI on the year, and was the first player named to this year’s National League All-Star team - his sixth straight All-Star selection.

He’s also been dominant as a pitcher, posting a 1.79 ERA with 95 strikeouts over 85.2 innings. Through 14 starts, Ohtani is 8-2 on the season.

The four-time MVP led the National League in runs the past two seasons and continues his run as baseball’s best player. Ohtani has now hit at least 20 home runs in six straight years, and in seven of his nine MLB seasons.

His 300-home-run mark is now miles ahead of any other Japanese player - Hideki Matsui is second with 175. Ohtani, Matsui, and Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki are the only Japanese players ever to reach 100 MLB home runs.
