Denmark secured their first victory at the Ice Hockey World Championships in Switzerland on Saturday afternoon, defeating Slovenia 4-0 in convincing fashion.

The result moves Denmark up to sixth place in Group B, ahead of both Slovenia and Italy. Coming into the game, Slovenia had the edge in the head-to-head, holding a 2-1-1 record against Denmark and a plus-one goal difference across their four World Championship meetings between 2005 and 2015.

Denmark controlled much of the first period but couldn’t convert their chances. They broke through on their first power play at 13:52 of the second period. Nick Olesen and Mikkel Aagaard set up Joachim Blichfeld, who beat Lukas Horak with a wrist shot.

The goal gave Denmark momentum, and they shut down Slovenia’s attempts to get back into the game. With 1:17 left in the period, Patrick Russell doubled the lead by redirecting Patrick Bruggisser’s point shot past Horak’s legs to make it 2-0.

Denmark’s penalty kill kept Slovenia from finding a way back in the third period. Late in the game, Russell scored his second of the night and Aagaard added another to put the result beyond doubt.
