Brøndby eyes next manager after sacking Steve Cooper

Brondby want to restore their aggressive playing identity. These five available managers could be the ones to do it.

After sacking Steve Cooper following a fourth-place finish, Brondby are considering five experienced coaches to lead their rebuild...

Five experienced head coaches who could replace Steve Cooper at Brondby.

Steve Cooper was dismissed yesterday after a disappointing season for Brondby. The team finished fourth in the league and lost to FC Copenhagen in the playoff match for a spot in the Conference League.

1) Bo Henriksen – The High-Energy Culture Builder

At his first press conference, new Football Director Julius Ohnesorge said Brondby must “find its way home” by rebuilding around “wildness, authenticity, and ambition” Bo Henriksen fits that brief perfectly.

Known for his passionate, high-pressure style and ability to motivate players emotionally, Henriksen offers a sharp contrast to the stagnant spell under Cooper. He’s currently available after leaving Mainz 05, and with his deep knowledge of Danish football, he wouldn’t need time to settle in.

2) Thomas Norgaard – The Homegrown Tactician

Norgaard’s connection to Brøndby runs deep. As a teenager he captained the club’s youth teams, won Youth Player of the Year, and worked under legendary managers like Age Hareide and Tom Kohlert. He often says his entire coaching philosophy was shaped by what he learned at Brondby during those years.

Since then he’s built a strong tactical reputation, including a spell as assistant manager at Sparta Prague. At Sønderjyske he’s established a competitive, modern side that plays attractive football in a 4-2-3-1 system.

3) Thomas Letsch – The Familiar Face with Bundesliga Pedigree

Thomas Letsch is a strong contender for the Brøndby job thanks to his availability and existing relationship with the club’s leadership. He previously worked closely with Benjamin Schmedes, Brondby’s former sports director, during their time together at Vitesse.

Letsch brings extensive experience from top-level roles, including managing VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga. He’s currently a free agent after leaving Red Bull Salzburg.

4) Ian Cathro – The Pressing Specialist Aligned with Brondby’s Vision

Ian Cathro is strongly linked to the Brøndby job because his tactical style matches the club’s goal of returning to aggressive, high-tempo football. At Estoril in Portugal’s top flight, he built a system around an aggressive, coordinated high press, exactly the intensity Football Director Julius Ohnesorge wants to restore at Brøndby Stadion.

His work hasn’t gone unnoticed. Cathro was recently named Primeira Liga Manager of the Month for getting results against clubs with much larger budgets.

5) Henrik Rydstrom – The Title-Winning Innovator

Henrik Rydstrom won consecutive Swedish league titles in 2023 and 2024, plus the Swedish Cup, during his time at Malmö FF. He’s known for a dynamic, innovative approach that blends high-intensity pressing with possession-based football, a style that fits Brøndby’s traditional identity.

Rydstrom was most recently head coach of Columbus Crew in MLS, and his current availability makes him a realistic option for a quick return to Europe. The board also values his track record of getting the most out of his squad, which makes him a strong candidate to replace Cooper.
