Auckland FC defeated Sydney 1-0 in the Grand Final on Saturday to become the first New Zealand club to win an A-League championship.

Cameron Howieson scored his first goal for the club in his 58th appearance with a deflected volley in the 60th minute. The midfielder’s strike from outside the box wrong-footed goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares and went in.

That goal proved enough for the hosts to lift the trophy in only their second season. The win set off celebrations in front of a sold-out crowd of 28,374 at Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium.

“I'm ‌so stoked. This was our goal from the start of the season. And ‌we're here, and we've done it,” said Auckland forward Jesse Randall.

“I'm so proud of all the boys and the staff, we've put so much work into this.”

Auckland joined a rare group of cross-border champions in world football. They now sit alongside AS Monaco, eight-time Ligue 1 winners in France, and Northern Ireland’s Derry City, who have won the league twice in the Republic of Ireland.

A few years ago, the club existed only as an idea. With backing from American billionaire Bill Foley, the Black Knights entered Australia’s top flight and quickly found success. Their rise has left New Zealand’s other A-League side, Wellington Phoenix, far behind.

In their first A-League season, Auckland won the Premier’s Plate for finishing top of the table after the regular season. However, they missed out on the perfect ending when they were eliminated in the playoffs.

They suffered a semi-final collapse at home, losing 2-0 to Melbourne Victory despite holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Australia.

All of that was forgotten on Saturday when they held on in a tense finish to beat the A-League’s most successful club and claim the title.

For Auckland coach Steve Corica, it was a night of mixed emotions as he won his third A-League title against his former club.

Corica led Sydney to back-to-back championships in 2019 and 2020, and as a player scored their winner in the first Grand Final in 2006 against Central Coast Mariners. He departed the club on poor terms after being sacked three games into the 2023-24 season.

Patrick Kisnorbo’s Sydney were chasing a record sixth championship. They reached the Grand Final after scraping past Newcastle Jets on penalties, following a last-minute equaliser in the semi-final.

There was no late comeback for Sydney at Mount Smart.

Captain Rhyan Grant missed a chance to equalise late on, denying himself a record-equalling fifth A-League title as a player. On 83 minutes he met a precise cross from English winger Joe Lolley, but his glancing header went just over the bar.

By then, Sydney could have been down by more. Moments earlier, Randall missed a clear chance to put the game beyond them when he blazed over from close range with the goal open.
