“We Want Four More” — Wembanyama, Spurs End Thunder Title Run To Reach NBA Finals
Wembanyama dominated Game 7 with 22 points, leading the Spurs past Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder. San Antonio now faces New York in the NBA Finals starting Wednesday.
“It doesn't mean anything for me other than the fact we are a team...”
Led by superstar Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs knocked off defending champion Oklahoma City 111-103 on Saturday to punch their ticket to the NBA Finals. They’ll now face New York in a championship series.
San Antonio won the Western Conference finals 4-3. The NBA Finals tip off Wednesday in San Antonio against the Knicks.
“Though we're still hungry for one more, this feeling is, I can't explain it, it's so powerful,” Wembanyama said. “We want four more. We're not done. Go Spurs go.”
It’s a full-team effort to close out Game 7.

“We had a good team, a great team,” Champagnie said. “We had to stay the course and play a good game.
“We were passing the ball. We were playing as a team. We come out here and play together.
“We never knew if we were going to get this far but when you've got the greatest player in the world things happen.”
That comment referenced Wembanyama, who was named Western Conference finals MVP and the NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
“It doesn't mean anything for me other than the fact we are a team,” Wembanyama said of his series MVP award. “I got this for all of us and all the fans right here.”
Of his teammates, Wembanyama added, “They don't even know how much I love them. They are just incredible. Everybody stepped up tonight.”
“Wemby” dominated in his first playoff Game 7 and got emotional at the buzzer, laughing, crying, and hugging teammates after reaching his first NBA Finals.
“Realising that some part of the childhood dream was going to come true,” the 22-year-old Frenchman said about his reaction.
The victory sets up an NBA Finals rematch of this season’s NBA Cup final, which New York won 124-113 over San Antonio last December in Las Vegas.
NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led Oklahoma City with 35 points.
Youth Overcomes Experience In Game 7
Forget experience. San Antonio had just one player who’d played in a Game 7 before.
Still, the Spurs beat a more seasoned Oklahoma City team that won a championship in Game 7 last year.
“Back in October we knew we had a chance to be pretty good,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
“There's a lot being talked about, words like competitiveness, resolve, togetherness, execution - who gives a damn about the word experience?
“They had to go out and execute and they did.”
Wembanyama knocked down two threes during a 17-9 run to open the fourth, pushing San Antonio ahead 97-86 with eight minutes left.
“Wemby” picked up his fifth foul moments later and headed to the bench. That gave Oklahoma City life down the stretch as Gilgeous-Alexander tried to spark a comeback for the defending champs.
Fill-in Spurs big Luke Kornet denied Isaiah Hartenstein at the rim on a fast break. San Antonio followed with a Castle bucket and a Champagnie three to push the lead to 102-91 with 5:33 left.
Oklahoma City made a push late, but never got the deficit down to one possession before the final buzzer.

The Thunder played without forward Jalen Williams because of a hamstring injury. Still, they hung around thanks to 20 first-half points from the bench and 17 second-chance points off offensive rebounds.
Gilgeous-Alexander scored 11 of his 19 first-half points during a 20-5 run that put Oklahoma City up 53-49.
San Antonio finished the first half on a 7-0 run. A Wembanyama dunk gave the Spurs a 56-53 lead at halftime.

Champagnie hit three threes and two free throws for 11 points during a 16-2 spurt that pushed San Antonio ahead 76-65. Gilgeous-Alexander then answered with a 12-3 run to set up the late back-and-forth.
