Toluca 1-1 Tigres 6-5 pens, Diablos win third Champions Cup in dramatic shootout...
The Mexican club secured the continental title on Saturday, downing fellow Liga MX side Tigres in a shootout.
Goalkeeper Luis García was the hero for Toluca, stopping Juanjo Purata’s penalty in the decisive round to seal a 6-5 win from the spot.
The match went to penalties after the two Liga MX sides were tied 1-1 through extra time.
It was Toluca’s first CONCACAF Champions Cup title since 2003. The tournament is the top club competition for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
García’s penalty heroics capped a standout night. He kept Toluca alive in regulation and extra time with several key saves against Tigres.
His late double save summed it up - first denying Romulo’s header, then stopping a point-blank shot from veteran French sub André-Pierre Gignac. Tigres players could only shake their heads.
Toluca weathered Tigres’ pressure and struck first in extra time. Jorge Diaz came off the bench and scored in the 104th minute.
Díaz took a pass from Fernando Arce, turned past the Tigres defense, and fired a low shot past former Argentina keeper Nahuel Guzman.

It looked like the winner, but the Nemesio Diez Stadium went quiet in the 114th minute. Brazilian defender Joaquim equalized for Tigres with a powerful header.
That sent it to penalties. Drama hit again when Franco Romero had his shot to win it saved by Guzmán with Toluca up 4-3.
Diego Lainez converted to make it 4-4 and force sudden death. But Tigres cracked first - Purata’s weak penalty was stopped by García.
