Superliga: AGF Beat Brondby 2-0 to Win First Danish Title in 40 Years

AGF sealed their first Danish Superliga title in four decades with a 2-0 victory at Brondby Stadium on Sunday evening. The result came after FC Midtjylland were held to a draw by FC Nordsjælland earlier in the day, confirming AGF as champions.

It’s the first time since 1986 that AGF can claim the crown of Danish football champions.

After leading the table for the entire season, Aarhus put the finishing touch on a dominant campaign at Brondby’s home ground on Sunday night.

Two first-half goals gave AGF a 2-0 win, and with 64 points on the board, no one can catch them in the title race.

Midtjylland finish on 60 points and will settle for silver for a second year running, though they have a shot at silverware when they face the Cup final on Thursday.

AGF had already been handed a boost before kickoff at Brondby, as FC Midtjylland were held to a draw in Farum by FC Nordsjælland. That result meant a single win from their final two matches against Brøndby and Viborg would be enough to clinch the title.

Playing with that advantage, AGF started strongly. Gift Links forced a save from Patrick Pentz with a long-range strike, and from the resulting corner, Henrik Dalsgaard redirected the ball into the net off his knee.

After taking the lead, AGF allowed Brondby more of the ball, and the hosts came close to equalizing on a couple of occasions. Seventeen-year-old Raphael Canut in particular missed a clear opportunity. Brøndby were made to regret it when Kevin Yakob drove into the box and curled a finish into the far corner to make it 2-0 after 25 minutes.
