Ligue 1: Lille End Monaco’s Champions League Hopes with 1-0 Win

Monaco Vs Lille
Lille strike first in chase for sixth straight away win

Lille moved into the top three with a 1-0 win at Monaco, whose wait for Champions League football will extend to another season.

An own goal gave Lille a crucial 1-0 victory at Monaco, ending the hosts’ top-four hopes and keeping Lille’s Champions League bid alive...

Monaco’s hopes of returning to the UEFA Champions League ended on Sunday after a 1-0 home loss to Lille left them unable to finish in Ligue 1’s top four. The result keeps LOSC in the hunt for a spot in Europe’s elite competition heading into the final matchday.

Lille, aiming for a sixth consecutive away victory, created the first real chance in the 15th minute. Thomas Meunier found Ayyoub Bouaddi with a through ball down the left, but Lukas Hradecky reacted quickly to block at his near post.

The visitors believed they had a golden opportunity just two minutes later when Clément Turpin pointed to the spot after Matias Fernandez-Pardo went down under a challenge from Jordan Teze. However, VAR intervened and the penalty decision was reversed.

After surviving that scare, Monaco started to see more of the ball, but they struggled to turn possession into chances. The only real effort came in the 27th minute when Maghnes Akliouche volleyed toward goal, though it bounced harmlessly toward Berke Ozer.

Lille nearly gifted Monaco an opening late in the half by losing possession cheaply in their own third. Teze and Akliouche combined quickly, but Akliouche dragged his shot wide of the target.

Both teams continued pushing for a breakthrough before the break. Fernandez-Pardo couldn’t connect with Hakon Haraldsson’s cross across the face of goal, and moments later Simon Adingra sent his attempt sailing over Ozer’s crossbar.

Monaco had seen both teams score in each of their last six outings, but that run looked set to end after Felix Correia lifted an effort over the bar and Thomas Meunier forced a straightforward save from Lukas Hradecky, with the score still level
past the hour mark.

Maghnes Akliouche remained Monaco’s main attacking threat, drilling a powerful shot on target, yet Berke Ozer was well positioned to deal with it.

With 18 minutes left, Lille’s trip south appeared to be paying off. Gaetan Perrin broke free on the left and pulled the ball back for Meunier, and as Denis Zakaria slid in to cut out the chance, he inadvertently turned it into his own net.

Monaco, managed by Sebastien Pocognoli, failed to seriously test Ozer in the closing stages. Lille looked to seal it on the counter through Ethan Mbappé and Fernandez-Pardo, but in the end a single goal proved enough to take all three points.

That marked only Monaco’s second league loss in 15 matches, despite the fact they had scored two or more goals in 12 of their previous 13 games across all competitions.

For Bruno Genesio’s Lille, the win extended their unbeaten league run to 13 games and moved them into the top three. Even so, Rennes’ victory later that evening means Lille hold just a two-point cushion over fifth place heading into the final matchday.
