Sundowns Slip Up at Home, Handing Orlando Pirates the Initiative in Title Chase

10-Man Sundowns draw with Chiefs as Pirates take control of Betway Premiership title race

Chiefs boosted Pirates’ title hopes while strengthening their own push for third place and CAF Confederation Cup qualification.

Brayan Leon’s second-half strike salvaged a point for Sundowns, but their three-point lead is now under pressure with Pirates holding a better goal difference...

Mamelodi Sundowns slipped up at home after being reduced to 10 men, drawing 1-1 with Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday and handing Orlando Pirates the edge in the Betway Premiership title race.

The result means Sundowns still lead the table by three points, but they no longer control their own fate.

Kaizer Chiefs have inadvertently aided their Soweto rivals Pirates while strengthening their own bid for a third-place finish and a spot in CAF interclub competition next season.

Chiefs broke the deadlock against the flow of play in the 25th minute when Flavio da Silva struck for the third time in six games and his 10th of the season across all competitions.

Ronwen Williams’ clearance was intercepted in midfield by Pule Mmodi, who found Mdu Shabalala to lay it off for Silva to finish from 12 yards. Williams managed to get a touch, but couldn’t keep the ball from crossing the line.

That marked Amakhosi’s first meaningful attack of the match and they made it count.

It also represented the first time Sundowns had fallen behind at home since Miguel Cardoso took charge in the Betway Premiership.

There were two major injuries before halftime, affecting both teams.

Chiefs midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu caught Sundowns defender Keanu Cupido with a high challenge that left Cupido with a suspected fractured collarbone.

It was an awful challenge, and the fact that it only resulted in a yellow card is bemusing. It could well have been a red. Ndlovu was perhaps still smarting after being clattered late by Jayden Adams earlier.

Ndlovu then probably should have got a second yellow anyway when his arm to the face of Khuliso Mudau went unpunished.

Adams was then fortunate not to see a straight red for a wild swing at Shabalala that forced the latter from the field on a stretcher. Again, the yellow card looked light for a challenge that was late, reckless and looked full of malice.

In the end, he did get a second yellow for simulation in the second half, and Sundowns played the final 25 minutes with 10 men.

The irony is that Ndlovu will miss the next match for his side anyway due to his accumulation of yellow cards this season.

Sundowns equalized eight minutes after the break, with a familiar scorer finding the net.

Brayan Leon met Mdu Shabalala’s delivery from the right with a composed finish that highlighted his sharp technique.

It was the Colombian’s 11th goal in 22 outings since arriving in January, and his fourth in the last seven matches.

He has proven to be a clinical finisher, arguably the most reliable in the league based on recent form, with a composure in front of goal that sets him apart.

Leon had earlier been denied one-on-one by Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, though replays suggested he was offside, making the eventual goal something of a balancing act.

The advantage now sits with Pirates. Sundowns hold a three-point cushion over the Buccaneers but have played one match more.

Pirates also boast a superior goal difference of +41 compared to Sundowns’ +34, which effectively gives them an additional point in the title equation.

If Pirates win their remaining three fixtures against Magesi FC, Orbit College, and Durban City, all of whom are fighting relegation, they will lift the league trophy for the first time since 2012.

Sundowns wrap up their league season within a week, hosting Siwelele on Saturday before travelling to TS Galaxy next Tuesday.

Chiefs sit five points clear of AmaZulu in the race for third and a CAF Confederation Cup spot next season.

They face away trips to Sekhukhune United and AmaZulu, who occupy fourth and fifth, before finishing at home against Chippa United, a side still battling relegation.
