Ivory Coast turn to two-time AFCON Winner Renard ahead of 2027 qualifiers. Renard Named Ivory Coast replaces Emerse Fae.

Herve Renard is back in charge of Ivory Coast. The Ivorian federation announced Tuesday that the French coach has returned for a second spell, eight years after guiding the Elephants to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations title.

Renard steps in after a brief stint as an emergency appointment with Tunisia at the World Cup in June. He replaces Emerse Faé.

Faé’s contract wasn’t extended after the World Cup. Ivory Coast made the knockout rounds for the first time in four tournaments under him, but were knocked out in the Round of 32 by Norway.

Renard was brought in mid-tournament to take over Tunisia after their 5-1 opening loss to Sweden.

The turnaround didn’t come. Tunisia then fell to Japan and the Netherlands, shipping another seven goals in the process.

Tunisia were the only African side among the 10 at the World Cup across Canada, Mexico and the United States to miss out on the Round of 32.

The 57-year-old Renard has also managed Angola, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Zambia - winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia in 2012.

He was most recently in charge of France’s women’s team at the Paris Olympics two years ago.

He’ll now target a third AFCON crown next year, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda set to co-host the tournament.

Ivory Coast kick off qualifying next month with a big home match against World Cup neighbors Ghana, followed by a Group C fixture against Somalia four days later.
