FC Twente delivered a commanding 4-0 victory over Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday, propelling themselves into third place and putting a UEFA Champions League spot within reach.

The Enschede side entered the weekend in a three-way battle for the final Champions League qualifying spot, sitting a point behind NEC and level on points with Ajax but trailing on goal difference.

Twente were unfortunate not to lead at the break, with Daan Rots and Thomas van den Belt both striking the crossbar during a dominant first-half display. Van den Belt even came close with an audacious overhead kick.

With NEC losing and Ajax drawing in the later kickoffs, Van den Belt put Twente on course for third in the 60th minute, tapping home Sam Lammers’ low cross to give his side a crucial advantage.

Van den Belt doubled Twente’s lead shortly after, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Sparta to slot past Joël Drommel and give the hosts a commanding two-goal cushion.

Kristian Hlynsson sealed the result with 20 minutes remaining, heading home to make it 3-0.

Daan Rots rubbed salt in the wound in the 78th minute, blasting the ball into the top of Drommel’s net for Twente’s fourth.

With Ajax falling to FC Utrecht in the 96th minute and Groningen defeating NEC, Twente moved ahead of both rivals in the race for third. They now hold a two-point edge over NEC and a three-point lead over Ajax heading into the final weekend, when they face champions PSV away.
