Genoa Secure Serie A Safety After Goalless Draw at Atalanta

Atalanta stumble again as Genoa cling on for a point

Atalanta’s winless run extended to four matches across all competitions. Justin Bijlow and Ederson both made key saves in a tight contest at Bergamo.

Giacomo Raspadori hit the crossbar but Atalanta couldn’t break down Genoa in a 0-0 draw...

Atalanta created the better openings and hit the woodwork through Giacomo Raspadori, but had to settle for a 0-0 draw. The result confirmed Genoa’s Serie A safety mathematically.

La Dea came into the game looking to stop a poor run that had brought just one point from three league matches and a Coppa Italia semi-final exit to Lazio. Lorenzo Bernasconi was ruled out for the season with a knee ligament injury, while Gianluca Scamacca started alongside Nikola Krstovic after the latter scored twice in the 3-2 loss to Cagliari. Genoa were on the verge of safety despite a defeat to Como. Tommaso Baldanzi remained sidelined, but Brooke Norton-Cuffy returned to the bench and Justin Bijlow recovered from a muscular twinge.

Vitinha and Nikola Krstovic forced early saves from the goalkeepers. Vitinha later found space on the counter, but his shot was deflected over after a break led by Lorenzo Colombo.

Ederson miscontrolled at a crucial moment when Davide Zappacosta’s pull-back left him in a promising position. At the other end, Justin Bijlow nearly let Charles De Ketelaere’s angled drive slip under him following a one-two with Giorgio Scalvini.

Giorgio Scalvini made a key block to deny Jeff Ekhator’s first-time shot at the other end, and Nikola Krstovic’s flick toward the near post didn’t catch Justin Bijlow out.

Atalanta missed a clear chance when Bijlow spilled Ederson’s long-range drive and Giacomo Raspadori poked the rebound straight at the goalkeeper.

Bijlow tipped Krstovic’s effort round the post, but Raspadori went closest in the 79th minute when his strike from the edge of the area crashed against the crossbar.

Genoa were forced to play the closing minutes with effectively 10 men after Junior Messias pulled up with a thigh strain when all substitutions had already been made.

Deep into stoppage time, a cleared corner fell to Ederson, whose right-footed curler skimmed the top of the crossbar.
