Oyarzabal penalty seals point for Sociedad in 2-2 draw with Betis

Mikel Oyarzabal’s 90th-minute penalty cancelled out Betis’ two-goal lead as Sociedad earned a dramatic draw in LaLiga.

Goals from Antony and Ezzalzouli put Betis in control, but Sociedad struck late to salvage a 2-2 draw and leave Betis six points off sixth...

Real Betis missed a chance to move six points clear of sixth place after throwing away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at Real Sociedad. The result still extends Betis’ unbeaten LaLiga run to six games, with two wins and four draws in that span.

Real Sociedad came into the game having taken just one point since winning the Copa del Rey, drawing once and losing twice. They knew a stronger showing was required in front of their own fans.

Betis had a golden chance to go ahead inside three minutes, but Antony fired straight at Alex Remiro when it looked easier to score.

Buoyed by that early opening, the visitors kept pressing, though Antony again fluffed his lines by dragging another good opportunity wide.

Sociedad were let off by the Brazilian’s wastefulness and began to settle. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men created a sight at goal themselves when Orri Oskarsson’s close-range effort was easily dealt with by Alvaro Valles.

True to the form that’s seen them win more often on the road lately - three wins, one draw, two losses in their last six away games, compared to two wins, eight draws and three defeats in the 13 before that - Betis stepped up before the break. Their pressure paid off when Antony curled a superb 20-yard strike into the bottom corner, his 14th goal of the season.

Betis picked up where they left off after the break and made it 2-0 quickly. Abde Ezzalzouli held off Jon Martin on the touchline and drilled a precise finish into the far corner past Remiro.

Matarazzo reacted with a double substitution, bringing on Luka Sucic and Pablo Marin. Sociedad looked livelier and thought they’d pulled one back just after the hour when Jon Gorrotxategi finished neatly, but the goal was disallowed for offside earlier in the move.

The hosts kept pressing and were rewarded in the 80th minute. Sergio Gomez delivered a tempting cross that Orri Oskarsson finished calmly, setting up a tense finish in San Sebastian.

Momentum was now with Sociedad, and after sustained pressure they won a penalty in the 90th minute when Aitor Ruibal was judged to have handled in the box.

Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up and smashed the spot kick into the roof of the net, securing a hard-earned point for the hosts.

The result meant Betis missed out on their first away league win against Basque teams in nine attempts. To make matters worse for Ruibal, he picked up a second yellow card late on.
