Doku and Haaland fire Man City past Brentford in second-half blitz

A second-half blitz from Doku, Haaland and Marmoush gave City a 3-0 win over Brentford, cutting the gap to Premier League leaders Arsenal.

After a goalless first half, City ran riot at the Etihad with goals from Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush to seal a 3-0 victory...

Manchester City cut Arsenal’s lead at the top with a 3-0 win over Brentford at the Etihad. It extended their unbeaten home run to 16 games this season, with 13 wins and 3 draws since the opening match.

After Monday’s 3-3 draw with Everton, City’s grip on the Premier League title race was no longer in their own hands.

Despite City’s chance to pressure Arsenal, Brentford created the first clear opening. A long Michael Kayode throw-in sparked chaos in the City box, and after Gianluigi Donnarumma misjudged it, the ball was cleared off the line.

City didn’t carve out a real chance until around the 20-minute mark. Jeremy Doku, who scored twice against Everton on Monday, tormented the left flank and delivered a cross that Erling Haaland headed over with the goal at his mercy.

That moment seemed to wake Haaland up. Minutes later he got City’s first shot on target, meeting Antoine Semenyo’s cross from the right, but his header went straight into Caoimhin Kelleher’s chest.

Caoimhin Kelleher barely had time to reset before pulling off another great save with his feet. Doku cut the ball back to Haaland in the six-yard box, but the Norwegian’s flick was stopped.

Keith Andrews’ Brentford side rode out City’s pressure to reach halftime at 0-0, with boos echoing around the Etihad for referee Michael Salisbury as the whistle went.

Brentford came out stronger after the break. Gianluigi Donnarumma had to dive low to keep out Igor Thiago at the near post after the Brazilian was played through by Kayode.

Against the run of play, City took the lead on the hour with a classy goal. In a repeat of his second against Everton five days earlier, Doku picked up the ball inside the box on the left, took a touch, and curled a sublime finish into the far corner.

Brentford had no response, and City’s nerves were settled with 15 minutes left when Haaland finally scored. He bundled it in with his heel after Antoine Semenyo’s cutback caused chaos in the six-yard box.

Kelleher’s quick reactions stopped it from becoming a rout soon after. He made a stunning save to tip Phil Foden’s point-blank strike over the bar.

Omar Marmoush made it 3-0 late on, played through by Haaland before finishing low into the far corner.

Manchester City’s delayed victory has put the pressure back on Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side head to East London tomorrow for a derby against a West Ham team fighting relegation, with City playing their game in hand against Crystal Palace midweek.

Brentford are still in the hunt for a first-ever European qualification with two matches left. It would be a historic achievement for the club in their 134th year.
