PSG UCL victory sparks clashes

As 100,000 fans prepare for a PSG parade, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez pledged “a strong law enforcement response” following 780 arrests Saturday.

780 arrested in France as PSG Champions League celebrations turn violent...

French authorities said Sunday that 780 people were arrested nationwide as PSG’s Champions League celebrations turned violent. The clashes followed Paris Saint-Germain’s win over Arsenal and were overshadowed by a road accident that left one young man dead.

Thousands flooded the streets of Paris on Saturday night to watch the final and celebrate PSG’s victory in Budapest. What started as mass revelry descended into disorder in several areas across the country.

But the celebrations turned chaotic as mobs clashed with police. Around 22,000 officers were deployed across France after similar unrest broke out last year when PSG won the competition.

Pointing to more fireworks being fired at officers, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told a press briefing that 57 security personnel were hurt and that there had been “219 participants injured in France, including eight seriously.”

The Paris public prosecutor’s office confirmed a man in his twenties died after crashing his motocross bike head-on into concrete blocks on a Paris ring road exit ramp.

The prosecutor’s office also said another young man was left seriously hurt after a knife attack in Paris, reportedly tied to a robbery.

Nunez added that a handful of thefts and looting incidents occurred in about fifteen cities, with violence reported in 71 municipalities nationwide.

The minister noted the 780 arrests marked a 32% jump from the number detained during PSG’s Champions League celebrations last year.

Macron And 100,000 Fans Set For PSG Parade Amid Security Pledge

Around 100,000 fans are expected on the Champs-de-Mars in front of the Eiffel Tower Sunday afternoon for a victory parade with the PSG squad. The players will then head to the Élysée Palace for a reception with President Emmanuel Macron.

Nunez vowed “a strong law enforcement response” for the team's return celebrations and warned of fines for “obstructing traffic” if anyone blocks the Paris ring road.

The mayor of Paris’s 8th arrondissement, which includes the Champs-Elysees where 20,000 fans gathered after the win, urged “zero gatherings” on the famous avenue as the only way to prevent more violence.

On Saturday night, Paris town hall said the “Champs-Elysees avenue and its surroundings ceased to be a place of celebration and became an arena of urban guerrilla warfare.”

It added, “Since it has become impossible to celebrate a match without descending into riots, the only common sense response is a new doctrine: 'zero gatherings,'” and demanded that approach.

Nunez rejected the proposal, saying it would “tie up almost half of the security deployment.” About 6,000 police and gendarmes have been assigned to cover Sunday’s celebrations.
