From Bayern Thriller To Budapest Pens: PSG’s Versatile Run To Back-To-Back UCLs

PSG hold nerve to beat Arsenal

Back-to-back UCL glory for PSG. Ousmane Dembele’s penalty canceled Havertz’s opener before PSG won 4-3 on penalties to beat unbeaten Arsenal.

Arsenal’s perfect UCL run ends in heartbreak as PSG defend title on penalties...

The 2024/25 UEFA club season ended Saturday as Paris Saint-Germain edged Arsenal on penalties in Budapest to defend their Champions League crown.

PSG held their nerve in the shootout to retain the trophy. Below are two key stats for each side from the final.

PSG Keep Cool To Defend European Crown

PSG stayed ice-cold under pressure to secure back-to-back Champions League titles. After Kai Havertz put Arsenal ahead, Ousmane Dembele leveled from the penalty spot just after the hour. Paris then held their nerve in the shootout, netting four of five to beat a stubborn Gunners side. That makes them the first club to defend the title since Real Madrid in 2017/18.

These two triumphs gave PSG their first ever UCL crowns and put them in rare company. They became only the eighth team to win their first two European titles in successive years. Uniquely, they’re the only club to do it in the Champions League era - the rest achieved it during the old European Cup period.

After years of near-misses, PSG finally reached the summit with a younger, tighter-knit squad. What stood out most this run was their adaptability. They blitzed Bayern 9-8 on aggregate in the semis, shut out Liverpool the round before, and then went the distance on penalties in Budapest. This team showed grit and flexibility to lift Europe’s biggest prize again.

They’ve also made a habit of beating English clubs lately. PSG are now unbeaten in nine against Premier League opposition, winning six of those, which underlines their dominance over teams from England.

Arsenal Heartbreak Repeats In Budapest

History repeated itself for Arsenal at the final hurdle. Like in 2006, the Gunners led at half-time only to be pegged back after the break. This time the pain cut deeper - they lost on penalties, the harshest way for a final to end.

For all their defensive grit and work rate, Arsenal now have two Champions League final defeats and zero titles. That puts them in a club no one wants to join as the fourth team to lose multiple UCL finals without winning one. Valencia and Reims have each lost two, while Atletico Madrid have suffered three final defeats.

Perfect Record, Empty Hands For Arsenal

The hardest pill to swallow for Arsenal is how dominant they were in Europe this season. They swept all eight league phase games - the first team ever to do it - then went 3-4-0 through the knockouts. Nine clean sheets, multiple goals conceded just once. Yet none of it was enough in Budapest.

Overall Arsenal finished 11-4-0 in the Champions League, unbeaten but still short of the trophy. It’s not new territory for them either. 46 years ago they went 4-5-0 in the 1979/80 Cup Winners’ Cup and still lost on penalties to Valencia. Twice now, Arsenal have gone a full European campaign without defeat and walked away empty-handed.
