The Montreal Canadiens tied their Eastern Conference semifinal with the Buffalo Sabres, rolling to a 5-1 victory at KeyBank Center.

After falling 4-2 in game one on Wednesday, Montreal came out looking to avoid a 2-0 hole against the Atlantic Division champions.

They struck early, going ahead just 1:36 in when Alex Newhook redirected Kaiden Guhle’s shot past Alex Lyon.

Montreal made it 2-0 a few minutes later. After winning a face-off, Michael Matheson created space and ripped a shot into the top corner, leaving Lyon with no chance as it beat him to the far side.

The Canadiens kept coming. Just under five minutes into the second period they pushed the lead to 3-0. Jake Evans sent a perfect pass up ice to Newhook, who beat his defender to the puck and buried his second goal of the night.

With their backs against the wall, Buffalo pushed to get on the board. Just before the second period ended, the Sabres finally broke through.

Zach Benson won the puck behind the net and fed it out. Connor Timmins returned it to him, and Benson finished from close range to cut the deficit.

Montreal outshot Buffalo 27-26 and restored the three-goal lead early in the third. Owen Power turned the puck over, and Alexandre Carrier capitalized on a 2-on-1, beating the goalie to send the traveling fans into celebration.

Nick Suzuki iced it late with an empty-net goal, sealing a 5-1 win for the Canadiens.

The series now shifts to the Bell Centre in Quebec tied 1-1, with Game 3 set for Sunday.
