Chelsea stopped their longest league losing streak since 1952 by holding Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. The result leaves the Blues still outside the European spots, while the Reds remain one win away from sealing Champions League qualification for next season.
Chelsea looked to have dealt with the early threat when their wall blocked Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick, denying the Hungarian a sixth direct free-kick goal of the campaign.
The clearance fell to Ryan Gravenberch, who responded with a superb finish of his own, curling a shot into the top corner from just outside the box. Marc Cucurella delivered a dangerous cross soon after that nearly brought an instant reply, but Virgil van Dijk threw himself in front to clear the danger from inside the six-yard box.
Liverpool’s captain had a perfect opportunity to make it 2-0 moments later, meeting a Szoboszlai cross unmarked at the far post. But his effort lacked composure, looping harmlessly over the bar like a defender’s clearance.
Cucurella nearly made Liverpool pay for that miss, forcing a pair of sharp saves from Giorgi Mamardashvili. The sustained pressure paid off just after the half-hour mark.
Enzo Fernandez swung in a low free-kick that found its way into the net, though there was some dispute over whether it took a touch off Wesley Fofana’s boot on the way through.
Chelsea finished the first half on top, and Fernández had a chance to seal his goal with a second before the break, only to be denied by a good save that kept the scores level.
The visitors thought they’d gone ahead minutes into the second half, again attacking down Liverpool’s right. But Cole Palmer’s strike was ruled out after a VAR check found Cucurella had strayed just offside in the buildup.
Liverpool then had a goal disallowed too, with Cody Gakpo straying beyond the last defender before nodding down for Curtis Jones to score.
Arne Slot drew rare boos from the Anfield crowd when he pulled Rio Ngumoha off midway through the second half, bringing on club-record signing Alexander Isak in his place.
The change unsettled some fans, but Liverpool did start to reassert control. Szoboszlai came closest to putting them ahead, striking the post, and Van Dijk later hit the bar. In the end, neither side found a winner, leaving both with a frustrating result.
Chelsea sit just four points above 13th, a position that would be their worst Premier League finish ever. Meanwhile, Liverpool will have to wait another week to lock in Champions League qualification unless Bournemouth lose to Fulham.

Arne Slot invoked rare boos from Anfield when he withdrew Rio Ngumoha midway through the half, replacing him with record signing Alexander Isak.
Despite the disquiet, Liverpool did begin to take control of the contest again, and only the post denied Szoboszlai the go-ahead goal, before the bar repelled Van Dijk. But ultimately, neither side could find the winner, leaving a dissatisfying result all round.
Chelsea are just four points clear of 13th, which would mark their worst-ever PL finish, while the Reds will have to wait another week to confirm UCL football unless Bournemouth lose at Fulham.
