World No. 3 Alexander Zverev beat surprise semifinalist Alexander Blockx to set up a Madrid Open final against Jannik Sinner.

Zverev took the first set with ease but found it harder to break Blockx in the second, eventually breaking through to close out the match.

“I'm very happy of course to be in a final,“ said Zverev, who lifted the trophy in Madrid in 2018 and 2021.

“There were a lot of tough matches, a lot of tough battles... and I'm looking forward to playing Jannik again.

“Tennis is very very easy for him right now, the way he is playing. Maybe on Sunday I will make it a bit more difficult for him.

“He's the best player in the world for sure, and I'm just trying to give him a tough battle.”

The 29-year-old broke serve in the first and fifth games to race to a 5-1 lead against the unseeded Belgian.

World No. 69 Alexander Blockx, the tournament underdog, held off pressure on his next service game and saved three set points to stay in it.

Zverev made no mistake on his fourth set point, sealing the opener with an ace.

Blockx fended off two break points in the opening game of the second set and another in the third as Zverev kept applying pressure.

The Belgian, who had upset Casper Ruud in the quarters, saved two more break points in both the seventh and ninth games.

Zverev finally converted his eighth break point to go 6-5 up, with a net cord helping break Blockx’s resistance.

After a run of semi-final losses this year, the German reached his first final with a commanding overhead winner.
