Luis Enrique Draws on Past Glory as PSG Face Bayern in Second Leg
| Luis Enrique speaks to media |
Manager Luis Enrique recalled winning the Champions League with Barcelona after beating Bayern at the same venue in 2015, saying it’s “another source of motivation.” PSG expect a frantic second leg after a wild 5-4 first-leg victory.
Despite their narrow advantage, PSG won’t sit back in Munich. Luis Enrique anticipates more of the same intensity after Bayern’s late comeback in a chaotic first leg...
Paris Saint-Germain head back to the ground where they lifted last season’s Champions League trophy as they face Bayern Munich in Wednesday’s semi-final second leg, and manager Luis Enrique has no shortage of reminders of that success if his team needs extra drive.
PSG carry a narrow 5-4 advantage from an action-packed first leg at home to Bayern’s Allianz Arena, the same stadium where the French side claimed their maiden Champions League title with a 5-0 victory over Inter Milan last May. Luis Enrique also guided Barcelona to Champions League glory ten years ago after beating Bayern in the semi-finals.
“Of course, we have brilliant memories here,” Luis Enrique told reporters on Tuesday.
“If I go a bit further back to when I was Barcelona coach, the year we won the Champions League, we played in the semi-final here against Bayern in the second leg, and we went on to win the final. So that is another source of motivation for me.”
After the chaotic first leg, in which PSG fell behind before surging to a 5-2 lead only for Bayern to pull it back to a one-goal deficit, the result in Munich is nearly impossible to call, though Luis Enrique said he anticipates another unpredictable encounter.
“As coaches, we always say the same thing, that there is a difference between the first match and the second,” he said.
“Normally, it's because of the result, the stadium, or the differences between the two teams. But in this case, I can't say it will be any different from what we saw in the first match.
"I think neither team accepts that the other is better, and that's what this match will reflect.”
“As a team, we have the same target as in every away game,” Luis Enrique said.
“That is our mentality, we try to win every game, and we don't need to play for a particular result because we just want to win tomorrow.
“We are ready, we know that Bayern can get back into it and that we can also score goals, and we are certainly not here to defend.”
Even with a one-goal cushion from the first leg, PSG are unlikely to approach the second leg in Munich with a defensive, hold-what-you’ve-got mindset.
